Melvin Carl Hamner, beloved husband of the late Ann Hawes Weisiger Hamner for 65 years, died on August 27th at the age of 93. While a 40 year resident of Fairfield, Ohio, Mel’s home for the past four years was in Harrison, where he passed peacefully in the care of his daughter.

Mel is survived by two children, Judith Spencer and Linda Susan (Fred) Hellmann, in addition to three grandchildren: Chris (Gina) Hellmann, Stacy (Neil) Eckstein and Michael (Michelle) Hellmann. He was blessed with three great-grandchildren: A.J. (13), Emma (10) and Avery (5) Hellmann.

He is preceded in death by his sister Hazel Milton and brother Gerald (Mabel) Hamner.

Melvin was born in Petersburg, Virginia on April 9, 1921. He joined the Navy in August of 1939, met Ann (Richmond, VA) at Virginia Beach in 1942 and married in November of 1943. Discharge from the Navy came in December of 1945, after which he attended college at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, VPI, (Virginia Tech). Mel graduated in 1949 as a mechanical engineer, spending his entire career with General Electric. He earned his Master’s degree in business from Xavier University. In addition to his passion for jet engines, Mel was an avid golfer winning the G.E.A.A. league championship with his golf partner of 47 years, Sam L’Herrison, many times. Mel shot a hole-in-one in 1977.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 3, 2014 from 5 to 7PM at the Avance Funeral Home and Crematory, 4976 Winton Rd., Fairfield, OH 45014 with funeral service to begin at 7PM. Rev. Mason Seevers officiating. Burial will be Thursday at 11AM at Crown Hill Memorial Park.
