Richard E. Mattes, beloved husband of Sharon Fitzgerald Mattes. Son of the late Karl and Mary Gladys Mattes of Pleasant Ridge. Brother of Marlene Mather, Karl Mattes, and Konrad Mattes. Loving father of Robert Mattes, Erik (Kelly) Freudenberg, Rick (Gloria) Mattes, Emily (Chad) Werner, Amy (Jeff) Maxwell and Sherry (Chuck) Ayala. Devoted Grandfather “Poppy” to Joseph (Caitlin), Maggie, and Joshua Freudenberg, Cara, Monica, and Amanda Maxwell, Benjamin, Abigail, and Galina Werner, Makenna and Makayla Mattes, and Megan and Steven Ayala. Great-grandfather of Luke Freudenberg. Special brother-in-law of John (Karen) Fitzgerald and the late Mary Patricia Morrissey; and dear friend of C. David Poppe and Milo Martinez.

Rich, 76, was a graduate of Woodward High School and the UC College of Pharmacy. He also served in the US Army Medical Corp and was a past president of the Hamilton County Pharmaceutical Association. He was the former owner of Mattes Pharmacy and Mattes Medical, and retired from the Kroger Company.

He was a Madeira resident for 32 years, and most recently resided in Sunrise Landing, where he enjoyed his retirement years by the lake.

Rich was a family man of faith and will always remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He was known for his kind and generous spirit and his unique sense of humor. His family would like to thank all who visited and prayed with Rich in his final days.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at the Madeira-Silverwood Presbyterian Church, 8000 Miami Ave., in Madeira, Ohio Wednesday December 17th at 4 PM. A reception will follow at the church in Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Madeira-Silverwood Presbyterian Church. A private interment ceremony will be held by the family at the Spring Grove Garden Mausoleum, at a later date.
